Sookmyung Women's University's High Advanced Writing for Academic and Vocational Competency course held a special lecture called "The Story No One Told." The lecture was held from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. on April 26 in Prime Complex 202 and focused on movies and movie criticism. The lecture was open to any students with an interest in movies and movie criticism. Shim Young-sub, a movie critic and a professor of Counseling Psychology at Daegu Cyber University, was the guest speaker for the lecture. She articulated the significance of paying close attention to various aspects of a movie while watching it and how to deduce the hidden meaning behind the scenes. She began by highlighting the features of good movie directors, such as camera work and mise-en-scène. Then she proceeded to demonstrate her points by showing several scenes from movies such as <Atonement>, <Psycho>, and <Old Boy> and providing their respective background stories. She emphasized the significance of possessing a diverse range of knowledge that enables one to identify the symbols and homages embedded in the movie. The lecturer ended by offering advice about how to write movie reviews to the students, telling them to read and write as much as possible, as it would undoubtedly help to be recognized well by others. She also emphasized the importance of new experiences and said "The courage to endure trial and error is important. I hope movies inspire you and change your mind." Kim Ye-rin, Department of German Language & Culture '24, said, "I signed up for this special lecture because I like to watch movies and want to take classes about them. After hearing the lecture, I got interested in some movies she used as examples and her life lessons were very inspiring." The special lecture provided students with information and insights about movies.
