On October 8th, SMU presented an honourary doctoral degree of Economics to Alassane Dramane Outtara, President of Cote d’ Ivoire.  This is just the second time that SMU has presented an honourary degree to a president of an African country.  President Outtara is an economic expert who graduated from the University of Pennsylvania.  He worked as Governor of the Bank of West Africa, and was Vice-president of IMF. President Outtara has a special relationship with Korea.  As Vice-president of IMF, he was deeply involved in negotiations during Korea’s economic crisis in the 1990s.  After becoming President of Cote d’ Ivoire, he established laws aimed at protecting women’s rights and focused on education for young women in order to increase their employment percentage.  SMU agrees with his philosophy about women’s education and decided to present him with an honourary degree.  Outtara said, “I think that giving equal rights to women is important in many fields.  I hope my visit to Korea provides a chance for not only economic help and friendship between the two nations, but provides the chance for universities from both countries to interact more.”  SMU plans to continue expanding relationships with other West African countries starting with the presenting of an honourary degree to President Outtara.  Hwang Sunhye, President of SMU said, “I hope to show the great ability and competitive power of SMU to West Africa and nurture West Africa experts.”
