On April 8th at 4:30 p.m, in the Main library’s CC Plaza, Sookmyung Women’s University hosted a communication conference with students and school officials.  The purpose of the conference was to respond to students’ complaints and hear students’ voices.  President Hwang Sunhye enjoyed students active participate and was appreciative of the contributions by students.  Not only was President Hwang present, there were a number of other prominent school officials at the conference as well.  The conference proceeded in two sessions.  The first dealt with students’ complaints.  Department officials detailed students’ grievances and offered possible solutions to the issues.  If the complaint was deemed unacceptable, they addressed the reasons concretely.  After this session, the conference proceeded to a question and answer session in which student representatives voice their opinions.  Topics introduced included rental of empty campus space, the management of school image, budget management, change in assessment methods, and the quality of professors.  Every student in attendance participated earnestly, so the time allotted for opinions was insufficient.  Lee Myungin, Department of French Language & Culture ’13, said, “The time allotted to opinion voicing was too short, and the answers provided by school officials were too vague.  Also, the school always maintains it will improve, but I haven’t ever seen any changes till now.  School authorities should realize the reasons why students are unwilling to participate in communication conferences, like this one.”  In response to this student, the person in charge of the conference said, “The purpose of the conference was to respond to students’ complaints and hear students’ voices.  Hence, the talk by each official was limited to five minute in order to ensure there was plenty of time during the question and answer session.”
