In the 70s and 80s, a school cafeteria was a place like a home to every student.  Employees who served were all waiting for students who always felt hungry because of unstable society and government, and students openly called employees ‘Auntie.’  At that time, students could not even afford the expense of meals, so the cafeteria provided much cheaper lunch and supper than any other restaurants outside.  Therefore, the responsibility of the cafeteria has let students eat their fill.  However, today many university dining halls have lost their original meaning which feeds students up like a mother and a house and has cooperated with big companies to take on all the school cafeterias.  Where is the cafeteria gone which always turned up the light to wait for hungry students?  It is time for school cafeterias to reconsider a meaning and duty and bears them in mind.

SMU Student Cafeterias

SMU has four cafeterias.  Misochan is a cafeteria in the Myung Shin Building, Hew (休) is in the library, Cafe′ Snow is on the first floor in Renaissance Plaza, and the faculty cafeteria is in the Queen Sunheon Building.  Don’t worry about the menus.  Each cafeteria has each style of food. These four cafeterias are all operated by Shinsegae food, so foods in the cafeterias of SMU are made of the same basic ingredients.  At the entrance of each cafeteria, there is an information board about the day’s menus.  The rice, kimchi, pork, and chicken are all products of Korea, and the beef is imported from Australia.  Shinsegae states clearly that they are a PL (Private Label) brand corporation using only premium ingredients and control the course of producing and preparation with strict standards.

Renovation of SMU Student Cafeterias

The interior of the student cafeteria Misochan was changed last semester.  There are many students’ opinions about the renovation.  One of the enrolled students, Choi Yereum, a junior in the Department of Public Relations and Advertising, said, “I’m surprised a little by Misochan’s interior variation because this change happened during my leave of absence term.  Compared with the previous interior, seats for students eating alone were decreased I think.  So I feel a little sorry about that.”  Another enrolled student Park Sungju, a junior in the Department of Telecommunications, said, “I like the changed interior better then the previous one, but I think the white tables are not a good change because dirty spots strike my eyes more than before.”  The dirty spots were also noticed by freshman Kim Myojeong, of the Division of Business Administration.  She said, “The interior is quite pretty generally, but the tables are almost all dirty when I drop by here.  I wish the tables would be cleaned every hour.”  Also, the faculty cafeteria was redesigned and redecorated during this winter vacation.  Like Misochan, it totally changed its seats, tables, lights, and especially the food distribution system, in which students and professors formerly served themselves buffet style: Kim Soo Min, 06 of the Department of Painting, said, "Renewal of the faculty cafeteria provides a better environment to professors and students, but people complained about its new distribution system where employees serve the meal.  Also, I don’t think the quality improved.”

Campus Cafeterias of Other Universities

Korea University adopted a unique way to choose a meal.  There is a designated price on each item and students can choose what they want to eat.  In average, students usually paid 2,000 won each time with fresh fruit. Also Ehwa Womans University (EWU) constructed its own new cafeteria in ECC (Ewha Campus Complex) called Main Dish and this cafeteria brings diverse menus for students’ lunches, although the price is much higher than the school cafeteria.  Another student cateteria operated by EWU has a salad bar which costs 1,000 won per 100 gram.  Park Ji-eun, a freshman in the college of Elementary Education of EWU, said, “The price of Main Dish burdens me a lot, since it costs more than twice as much as the regular cost of a school cafeteria.  But I think it’s worth it.”  A school-operated cafeteria at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) is known as the most delicious among the universities in Seoul.  Um, a sophomore in the College of Chinese Languages of HUFS who preferred not to give her name, said “The quality of dishes of our cafeteria is well worth the money.  Many students of Kyung Hee University often come to eat the meal.  I’m really satisfied both with quality and price.”

Prices Up Again

After vacation, almost all students got confused at the rise in the price of their lunch.  Kim Subin, Division of education 07, expressed, “I was upset by an unexpected increase of price, and a friend told me the price of employment was going up, but it couldn’t affect the price of our meal.  The cafeteria also raised the price in 2007.  It doesn’t make any sense that the price keeps going up every semester from 2008.  Only the rise of price cannot be a fair solution to every student who often uses it.”  Shin Hyun Duck, a manager of Property Management in SMU, argued, “With regular inflation, Shinsegae food required to bring up the price of a meal, and the school cannot only take care of students’ situation any longer.”  However, the raise still sparked the students’ opposition. Kim Jeonghak, a sophomore of the Division of Economics, complained, “It will be reasonable that the price goes up if the quality is proved to be better, but I don’t think the quality is improved.”  SMU Student Government ‘THE CHANGE’ stated, Students cannot understand the reason why school increased the price even though our price was average compared with other universities, and the faculty cafeteria made an increase of 300 won after a big renovation during vacation.”  According to ‘THE CHANGE,’ requested the school change the decision about the price increase.  Shin added, "The school still doesn’t plan to decrease the price.  SMU chooses to provide better ingredients, distribution system, and hygienic conditions of student cafeteria even if the price is a little more expensive than before. Problems will happen if the school chooses a low-priced distribution system, so the school and cafeteria determined to raise the price.”

Do you feel hungry?  Then today how about having a lunch at the student cafeteria?
