Turning imagination into reality, that is his desire as well as work.  His creativity makes people delight in music and dance, share their joy with their company at festivals.  He has designed many festivals and programs.  One of them, the "Club Day" is based on his experience of becoming absorbed in dance.  His passion and endless pursuit of something new have been the motive to step forward.  Though he lives in a whirl of business, he seems free in everything.  This year's "Hi Seoul Festival" is one of his most outstanding achievements, and it is his fifth time doing the annual event.  After the festival finished, The Sookmyung Times (SMT) met director Ryu Jae-hyun (RYU).

SMT:  You majored in design, and now you work in a bigger field than just design.  When do you find value while you work?
RYU:  I think that because I specialized in design, I am able to do the things I do now.  It is analogous to a set of stairs.  If I go up the second stair, I could ascend to the third stair.  Though animals and plant have their own boundaries, there are no reason to restrict your set of values.  In this way, I feel content when I achieve my dream and imagination.

SMT:  Please, let us know about Sangsang Movement of Sangsang Gongjang.
RYU:  Gongjang uses the Chinese letter mean 'artisan.'  That is, it means ideamaster.  Sangsang Movement includes Sangsang academy, Open Gongjang, Babo Project and so on.  First, in the academy, we try to take down exiting systems of education like classification of age or level.  It is the most natural thing that passes over them, because culture has no concrete framework itself and pulls down many things recently.  Second, through Open Gongjang, lots of pieces of works have been opened to the public.  It makes the program worth perusing.

SMT:  "World DJ Festival" and "Seoul Rock Festival" have created a sensation as Korea’s very own Woodstock Festival.  What is your desire in supervising the "Nangiwon" program called Asian Festival paradise and held from 4 May to 6 May?
RYU:  The most important thing is communication.  The collaborative effort and mutual understanding have accomplished between director and participants, visitors and musicians.  Through this, we can dream something new.  Therefore it takes effect the synergy.

SMT: As direct "Hi Seoul Festival" for 5 years, what is your think about the limitation and significance of a number of festival in Korea?
RYU: The festival is a deviation from everyday life.  So, the festival permits people to play, feel and enjoy freely as well as offering new delights.  However, our exiting festival fence the directors from carrying out of their own accord.  If the directors could pour all their imagination and passion into the festival, no work is more valuable than this.  I think the process to overcome actual problems is just one important cultural movement.  It is worthwhile to go through.

SMT:  What is your opinion about the recent university students' culture?
RYU:  The students are too smart.  There is no cultural identity within them.  They should set up their culture that is best suited to them and they have to have enough ability.

SMT:  Please, tell us something in connection with culture.
RYU:  Find your own color.  And give the cultural colors definition.  In young age, the grades and credits are not important thing at all.  Take out your idea and imagination and express yourself. Find proper circumstances and put your enthusiasm into it with passion.
