These are just a few examples of today’s cultural assets that are said to “stimulate an analogue sensibility.” The word analogue is originally used for technological instruments that indicate a linear quantity. Digital devices tell you automatically the information you need, but you have to read for yourself the needle on an analogue device, which is why the word analogue should mean manual and not vintage or retro. However, the current definition of analogue is exactly that. The meaning has expanded into an expression for the past, where they used to have analogue devices. Yet, the word has become too vague and conventional. So the Sookmyung Times Reporter, Yi Joonyoung, spent a day filled with the so called “analogue sensibility,”in order to find out its true definition.

Hi, I’m Kim Nuri from the information broadcasting department and I’ve participated in an exchange program from last fall till this summer in TUFS (Tokyo University of Foreign Studies). Let me tell you about the days I’ve had in Tokyo which beautifully colored my last year, and which somewhat different from the days in Korea.

As people living in the twenty-first century, we often wonder what the ideal relationship is between past and present. About this question, maybe nine out of ten would answer that past and present should be in harmony. And just as if another question is waiting for the answer, this new question follows right behind your answer, “Then how can we make harmony between them?” Now, how can you answer it? Maybe no one can give a perfectly right answer, because it is not a problem of facts but of values. However, we need to think and should have our own thoughts. “How can the past and present be in harmony?”

We members of the society are on an impossible mission. In a period of time where people are identical to one another as if printed out by a machine, originality is crucial. Thus, we stand on the edge of the cliff, not being able to go backwards onto the safe side and remain on the same as everyone else, but also not being able to take another step forward and go beyond ‘different,’ strange. Everyone wants to be different, but no one wants to be strange. However, here are two exhibitions that specifically require a strange mind and perspective in order to be able to fully appreciate its works: the Fun Museum and the Rolling Ball Museum.
