2021 has arrived. As we all faced hardship because of COVID-19 in last year, many people are welcoming 2021 with open arms. People greet the new year in various ways. Some celebrate by listening to certain songs because there is a strong belief that the first song listened to in the new year will set the tone for the year. Therefore, people make careful decisions about their first song of the new year. What songs did Sookmyungians listen to and what kind of 2021 are they hoping for?
1. As You Wish – WJSN
(Yang Jiwon, Division of Business Administration '21)
This song is about our desire for everything that we want to achieve. Originally, I failed SMWU admissions, and I was deeply saddened as I really wanted to stay here. I know about the superstition that the new year could be influenced by the first song one hears in the new year, so I played this song and listened to it with great earnestness. I then got the notice that I had been accepted into SMWU. I highly recommend this song to anyone dreaming of achieving something.
2. Hold My Hand - IU
(Kim Chaeyoung, Department of Political Science & International Relations '21)
Hold my Hand is IU's first self-composed song, and it shows her outstanding music talent. She is great at writing lyrics and composing music. Recently, I have spent a lot of time listening to this song. As soon as I first heard the song, I felt like all my troubles were melting away. I recommend this song to Sookmyungians with the hope that their academic and employment concerns caused by COVID-19 will also melt away.
3. New Shoes – IU
(Baek Sua, Division of Korean Language & Literature '21)
IU highlights herself walking freely around in new shoes in this song, which reminds me of the excitement of a new start. Playing the song as the first song of the new year, I had hoped that SMWU would be like a new pair of shoes to me. Like IU who goes anywhere in her new shoes, I want SMWU to take me to where I want to go as my new shoes. I wish that Sookmyungians reading this article are inspired to chase their dreams and go in the direction they want for 2021 by listening to this song.
4. Hope – HOT
(Jeon Subin, Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering '21)
The song has a cheerful melody and hopeful lyrics. This song energized people through the economic recession in the late 90s, and provides great support to those of us currently having a hard time due to COVID-19. In the song, the expression "together" is often mentioned. As a freshman who hopes to go to school and meet classmates as soon as possible, I hope people remember the song's lyrics and act together to make the world free of COVID-19 in 2021. And I would like to recommend anyone wanting to start the new year right to listen to this hopeful song.
