“You need to separate plastics when you recycle.  Protect our environment!”  Everyone has heard this sentence several times since childhood, and we follow the rule routinely.  However, have you ever thought of plastic being turned into material for art?  The Sookmyung Times strongly recommends visiting ‘Plastic Fantastic-Direction for Imagination’.  Plastic is turned into artistic chairs, picture frames, and light fixtures all of which can be seen at the exhibition.  This SMT reporter visited the exhibition to see firsthand the marvelous art creations made from plastic.

PLASTIC IS FANTASTIC

Plastic was invented in the middle of the 20th century as material for industrial use.  It soon was put to use in the development of daily supplies, making life more convenient.  It is now being used to create beautiful artistic works.  At the exhibition, visitors are introduced to the process of turning plastic into superior works of art by various artists.  World famous furniture brands also participate in the exhibition and display their creations as well.  ‘Plastic Fantastic’ is an exhibition that highlights the use of plastic to create furniture, lighting, graphics, and photographs.  Each piece in the exhibition also features the individual artist’s creativity and challenging spirit.  To reach the exhibition, use of public transportation is the best.  One should take bus number 421 from the Sookmyung Women’s University bus stop and get off at the Soonchunhyang Hospital stop.  The museum is less than 10 minutes on foot from the bus stop.

The exhibition consists of 6 parts.  The first part is ‘The Beginning of a Dream, Polymer’, which briefly centers on the journey to the fantastic world of plastic by introducing plastic’s unique characteristics and potential.  The exhibition starts in earnest from the second section ‘Bring Colors to Domesticity’.  This section shows the development of plastic from the 1950s when it started replacing natural materials in household items and began to demonstrate some of the material’s earliest changes.  Bright colored labware and dishes made of plastic caught this reporter’s eyes.  The third part of the exhibition ‘Molding New Living’ is comprised of three sections, and there are a lot of colorful children’s furniture and lamps.

The most attractive point in this section is the garden with its numerous lamps.  The garden resembles that of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’.  After looking through this section, visitors come to a display of amazing light fixtures followed by stairs.  This spot is defi nitely a place for taking memorable photos.  The fourth part ‘Design Becomes Everyday Landscape’ is divided into two parts: a photography room and a fi lm room, both offering unique perspectives of plastic and design.  Here a short film featuring an interview is played repeatedly and it discusses the collaboration of media and plastic.  At the fifth section, ‘When Designers Dream’, a number of transparent chairs are seen moving in a circular motion.  Visitors are free to take pictures in the mirror room at the corner of the section as well.  In the last part of the exhibition ‘Constantly Evolving’ visitors are shown installation representing the future of plastic.  As visitors exit the exhibition, there are two special photo spot areas: one is the colorful vase path and the other is the blue light path.  Visitors might be able to take the best shot there.
