On September 10, the 16th Presidential Retirement and the 17th Presidential Inauguration Ceremony was held in the Samsung Convention Center in Centennial Hall.  The following was the order of the program; welcoming remarks by Dr. Yong-tae Lee, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, farewell address by the 16th President, Dr. Kyungsook Lee, and finally the inaugural address by the new President, Dr. Young Sil Han.

On leaving Sookmyung Women’s University, President Kyungsook Lee addressed the students; “Since being appointed as the 13th President, the past 14 years during which I’ve been working for Sookmyung have been the most brilliant time in my life.  Sookmyung has overcome difficulties with concern and support which shows the unity of Sookmyungians.  For me, Sookmyung is my teacher, my pride and my life itself.  Even though I am leaving Sookmyung, I’ll always pray for it.”

After the address and introduction of the new president, Young-Sil Han took an oath that she will succeed the spirit of Sookmyung and do her best to raise the talented future leaders of tomorrow.  In her address, she said, “Established in 1906, Sookmyung has been an independent educational institute which does not depend on foreign capital.

As it is the beginning of my term, I’m worried about it, but at the same time, I’m overwhelmed with deep emotion.  My vision is to raise creative talent with thinking power.  Also, by providing a better research environment, inviting prominent professors, expanding more internship courses, and connecting Sookmyung with not only other universities but other organizations, I believe that Sookmyung will become more advanced.  Wherever there is humankind, education is necessary.  I promise to do my best to develop Sookmyung with my mission.”

Above and beyond their addresses, the president of Sogang University, Sohn Byung-doo, also greeted the new president of Sookmyung.
