March, PR of NiViS

The word ‘Nivis’ came from Latin, meaning ‘snow on the branches or snowflake.’  The name was made from SMU's symbol.  NiViS had tried to announce and grace SMU after its foundation in 1986.  Also, the uniforms of NiViS have symbol mark and blue color which is symbolic color of SMU.  Lee answered the question about awareness and response of Sookmyungians, “In my opinion, NiViS has a good awareness and Sookmyungians respond to our performances well.  When we receive an enthusiastic ovation and hear shouting, passion and power inside my mind are surged up.”

June, Cheerleaders vs. Cheering Squad

Cheering squads of Korean universities are different from cheerleaders in the U.S.A..  In case U.S. cheerleaders, they show acrobatic movement like tumbling, building towers and stunt flying.  However, in Korea, doing synchronized movements of all members is the focus instead of acrobatic movement.  Usually, People called movements of cheering squad to ‘action’ and they don’t know differences between dance and cheering action.  However, dance and cheering action are clearly different from each other.  Powerful and moderate actions and unity that all members do same action are main part of cheering action, not dance.

September, the Captain of a Cheerleading Squad

On stage, the captain is a face representing the cheering squad.  External activities are more outstanding than internal activities because of the cheering squad’s specialty.  So, the captain is the person who effects very much the image of NiViS.  The leading role of the captain is very important not only on stage but also off stage.  First, the captain plays the role of arbitrator between a lot of OB seniors and present members.  If OB seniors and present members don’t communicate with each other, NiViS can’t exist.  Captain handles everything like various events Q&A and final transaction of business.

October, Sookmyung Snowflake Festival

NiViS also has a performance in the Sookmyung Snowflake Festival. Performances of the Cheering Squad are flowers of the festival.  They create new cheer actions for every important event.  When NiViS makes cheer actions, they choreograph like the way adding creation and application of colorful actions in basic actions.  There are arm basic actions, the arm roll, right or left foot jumps, both feet jumps, big clapping, small clapping, and pulling as basic elements of actions.  Especially, the action that captain hit the stage with her leg at the beginning or ending makes unity because all members must take the basic posture after finishing actions.  Through this process of many cheering moves and a lot of rehearsal, NiViS can show powerful and moderate performances to Sookmyungians.
