Abraxas* started in 1999. The students who loved bowling made a club and it has been going on ever since. They gathered just because they love bowling and they wanted to enjoy it with other people. “I first bowled in the winter vacation after the College Scholastic Ability Test, and I felt it was very interesting. Therefore, I joined the bowling club Abraxas,” said the chief of Abraxas, Jung Chae Yoon.
Just Come, and Learn
Abraxas is a club for those who wants to bowl and learn bowling. Not knowing about bowling does not matter to join the club. Many of members came to Abraxas and learned how to bowl first. Throughout practice, club members can improve their bowling skills and be familiar together. Also, Abraxas is included in an intercollegiate bowling club of five universities. Korea University, Yonsei University, Hongik University, and Ewha Womans University are the members. “But, many fresh Sookmyungians are afraid about doing bowling because it is a sport,” Jung said. However, as many alumnae had been in the bowling club, bowling is not just a hard sport to women. “Do not be afraid of bowling. It will be hard at first, but as time goes on beginners can also find enjoyment in bowling.”
Who Is the Best?
Abraxas is a united club, so the Five-University Tournament is held four times a year. Throughout the Five-University Tournament, all bowling club members meet together and weigh their abilities against that of the others. Sookmyung Abraxas won the overall championship in ’05 and ’07. “When we hold the Five-University Tournament, many seniors come to see it. After the match we can talk with them and get lots of information about school or life. The Five-University Tournament is not just a game to determine the best team, but also to learn about something.”
We Bowl Because...
“By bowling, I could exercise and get rid of stress. Especially, when I hit a strike I feel a shudder. The sound of falling bowling pins is very exciting,” Jung said. Thus, one of the reasons to bowl is to exercise and have fun. Another reason to bowl is to make a real friendship. Abraxas members meet together to bowl, but they often meet just to socialize or talk with other members. One of the strengths of Abraxas is friendship. Bowling helps people to become closer, and while bowling together, we can be real friends.”
* Abraxas is the name of the godhead whose symbolic task is the uniting of godly and devilish elements.
Club Abraxas is made of people who love bowling. Even if the start was not love, after bowling once or twice, they fell in love with bowling. The skill of bowling is not important in Abraxas. Enjoying the bowling is much more important. Do not be afraid of a sports club. In Abraxas, you can enjoy sports in an easy way.
