There is a reasonable ground that France has gained fame as a nation of press.  Freedom of the press, offering newspapers freely for university students, and what in addition to these gives France its reputation?  They have whole universities specializing in journalism.  In France, there are about 100 specialized journalism universities, and the Sookmyung Times (SMT) met Pascal GUÉNÉÉ President of Institut Pratique du Journalisme (IPJ), one of the top four journalism universities.

Journalism Specialized University, IPJ

“In France, young people’s preference for type of press is quite immense,” President

Pascal GUÉNÉÉ started explanation.  IPJ, established in 1978, has kept up with this trend, and produces many reporters, PDs, and other types of press men.  IPJ accepts only 40 students yearly but over 800 people apply.  An entrance exam is taken once a year in seven cities in the whole country.  General knowledge, understanding capacity about current affairs, creativity, and writing skill are evaluated.  The 40 entering students, with 40 graduates a year could seem quite few, but almost all graduates from 1978 have stayed in some type of press-related work, so
the senior-junior relationship is very strong.  IPJ is for the master's course, so people who want to be in press jobs and who have experience in practical business are a majority of the applicants.

For Being Press Men

In IPJ, a practical lesson upon real task is much more than a theoretical lecture.

The curriculum divides into Master 1 course and Master 2 course.  Master 1 is a basic course training freshmen about all radio, TV, web news, and newspaper generally during the first year.  After passing Master 1, students can choose a specialized field.  In Master 2, they select among three fields, 1) radio, TV, and newspaper, 2) press agency or editor-in-chief, 3) media management.  When they are classified, they determine the details of their major among the business desk, the political desk, and the social desk.  This professional curriculum is completed by the faculty.  Reporters in the active post compose 75% of the faculty.  They teach students at the level of the real task, and also emphasize the most important element they felt in the field, like ethics and a sense of responsibility.  Students hand in a four-page newspaper every day which is completed from writing articles to forming the design by themselves. About these assignments, reporters in major newspaper companies give feedback for each task, for each student.  In this curriculum, reporters watch carefully each student's capability, and pick out students for recruiting as soon as they graduate.  It is also good for reporters because they can take proper students they want.

Time with French Student, Joachim

SMT had professional time in IPJ listening about curriculum and general trends in France from the side of the press.  Having a different signification from that, SMT could have comfortable talking time with university student Joachim Germain who attends L’Ecole Francaise des Attaches de Presse (EFAP) which also specializes in the press: public relations, human relations, and communication.  We could talk with Joachim at the level of a student’s eyes.  He said a full time internship in a practical field is an essential part for graduation and a majority of the graduates become publicists or advertising solicitors in enterprises.  Most students read newspapers offered by major newspaper companies freely, thanks to government policy, so in EFAP there is no school newspaper.  Each famous newspaper has their own characteristics, so a class of readers could be divided.  However both Le Figaro and Le Monde which are provided free for students are popular among them.  When SMT got in EFAP following with him, we could see newspapers lying on the entrance.

Education for ethics and a sense of responsibility as reporters in IPJ, and EFAP’s full time

internship in a real field which is an essential element for graduation both imply, “In journalism field, becoming a professional is important of course, but being a cultured person suitable for a practical field of the press is genuinely significant.”
