There are two women who are most blamed in history. Can you guess who they are? These women appear in Greek and Roman Mythology and the Bible, respectively. Then, mythological one is Pandora. Pandora is the first female human in Greek and Roman Mythology whose name has the meaning, “a woman who got gifts of all.” When she came to the human world, with the gift of a box, Zeus told Pandora she should never open the box. Over time, her curiosity was getting increased and it made her to open the box after all. However, what she opened was chaos – diseases, jealousy, anger, and every vice started to spread. And as you know, there was only one thing in her box, hope. Now, in the Bible the first woman, Eve, was made of a rib of Adam, the first man in the world. And she had a strong taboo, too. Never eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. However, one day the serpent tempted Eve to pick the forbidden fruit and she ate the fruit. As a result, Adam ate it, too. For this disobedience, Adam and Eve were exiled in the Garden of Eden and got the everlasting punishment – Man should work hard and Woman got the pain of pregnancy. These two women broke the taboos respectively and it became the reason of mankind’s pain. The result of their curiosity was too harsh that they are blamed until now. However, when we think a little differently, there is a big difference. Instead of stupid women, they can be pioneers of the great change. Without darkness, there is no light. By making people to know the problems and to recognize the darkness, Pandora made the hope more valuable. By picking up the forbidden fruit, Adam and Eve came out of the world of dream and opened the history of mankind. They are the women who make surprising change. All changes occur for something better. And the Sookmyung Times challenged the change. Of course, we changed to be better. Oprah Winfrey said, “We can’t become what we need to be by remaining what we are.” Sookmyungians, no matter how small a thing would be, change it. Of course, it is for something better.
