On May 11, 2009 a special lecture was given by Hyo-eun Kim of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Ambassador for Climate Change and the writer of ‘A Diplomat is a National Multiplayer.’ This special lecture was held in Gemma Hall from 1 to 3 P.M. and was cosponsored by the Career Development Center and the division of Political Science and Public Administration at SMU. Under the main subject of the lecture, “The Actual Spot of DiplomacyㅡClimate Change and U.N. Negotiations,” Kim let Sookmyungians know about what’s going on around the world regarding climate change. “Conflict between advanced countries and developing countries is quiet keen, because undertaking responsibility is directly connected to damage to economic development.” She continued, “Green Development, the keynote of Korean government’s energy policy, is not optional but indispensable.” She also stressed the importance of ‘alternation of paradigms’ of living conditions which means saving energy in everyday life. There was also a chance to ask her about her career as a diplomat and how to be an international public official. On answer to the question of one student who asked what one of the major conditions is that a diplomat has to prepare, she emphasized the importance of physical strength. Kwon Ye-ji, Division of Humanities 09’, who took part in this lecture said, “It was great to hear from her about the real experiences that a diplomat undergoes, and she gave us a perfect lecture about climate change that is a matter of grave concern to everyone.”
