Waffle House is commonly known as one of the most popular cafe around Sookmyung Women’s University. It has been in business for over 22 years. Yet, not so many people know about the story that underlies. Waffle House opened in 1989 and started funding for Sookmyung Women’s University up until now. Among many other stores near Sookmyung, Waffle House has been financially contributing to the university with the largest amount and for the longest time. The cafe is a family business of Kim, the CEO of the company. She mentioned that the store was opened with only four tables in the beginning. As time passed by, more of customers came to the cafe and that is how the business flourished. “It would not have been possible if it were not for Sookmyung Women’s University,” said Kim. “When you try typing Waffle House on Internet, automatically people put ‘Sookmyung University Waffle House’ on the search link. Sookmyung is now the inseparable logo of our business and I really appreciate that.” Waffle House has a great reputation for serving the extraordinary strawberry ice flakes. The reputation started in 1980 when having snowflakes with fruits was not common. According to the record, Waffle House was the very first store to try putting fresh fruits in the dish. “At that time, people found it very innovating. People just loved searching for strawberries inside their ice cream,” the CEO commented. Waffle House was asked by many big corporations for opening up franchise stores and it declined each request. “For us, this is more than just a business. Waffle House is the history of our family and evidence of great improvements made by hard efforts from generation to another generation,” Kim said with determined voice. “What we hope is that our business maintains to flourish in continuous interest of our customers.” Recently, not many stores near the university get involved in school business. In the past, stores would sponsor food for school festivals and events and share mutual benefits. However, a lot of small stores are experiencing disadvantages now that so many famous brand stores are taking the chances. Serious measures need to be applied in order to protect stores that reflect culture and history of Sookmyung Women’s University.
